Department of Political Science : Morigaon College

Introduction

The Department of Political Science is dedicated to excellence in teaching and service. As a department, it offers a solid foundation and broad understanding of the discipline and allows students to have substantive interest at local, regional, and national levels. Currently, the department has five experienced and dedicated faculty members. 
The teaching-learning methods adopted include experimental learning, participative learning, problem-based learning, ICT methods, software used -SPSS, STATA, and  Zotero, and e-content development tool: https://lms.morigaoncollege.online. 

The student activities conducted by the department include student seminars, awareness programmes, class tests, project work, educational tours, and extension activities.   

Over the last five years, 30.62 % of students have enrolled in higher education. Moreover, 16.17% have job placement.  

 

History

Morigaon College was established on 1st July 1964. It is among the oldest higher education institutions in the undivided Nagaon District of Assam. It has already completed 60 years as one of the premier institutions engaged actively in nurturing and disseminating rays of education in the region. In 1984, the Department of Political Science was established, and both honours and general course were introduced.

Awards of the Department

  1. Dr Achyt Kr Das, the department head, was awarded the Dr B.R. Ambedkar Ratna Award in 2018.
  2. Tarun Kakati, a Department of Political Science student, was awarded as the best graduate for the session 2021-2022. 
  3. Bobita Das, a fifth-semester Department of Political Science student, achieved first position in the 4th All Assam Armwrestling Championship, 2024, which the Bokhakhat Armwrestling Association hosted. 
  4. Sumi Das, a Department of Political Science student, was awarded the best college graduate for the session 2023-2024.
  5. Dr Pallavi Hazarika, working as an assistant professor in the department of political science, was the runner-up in the inter-institutional badminton competition in 2024.

Achievements of the Department

  1. Bhumika Deka has been awarded the best literary award at Gauhati University for the session 2018-19.
  2.  For the 2018–19 academic year, the Department of Political Science was able to reserve the top spot for the Departmental Cultural Rally during college week.
  3. Alumni Manisha Kalita is currently working as an  ACS CO Ghograpar. 
  4. Alumni Trishnashree Devi is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science, Rupahi College, Nagaon. 
  5. Alumni Sudarshan Sarai works as the Child Development Project Officer. 
  6. Srimanta Das and Nihar Jyoti Bordoloi are working as SI Commando , Assam Police
  7. Nayana Devi works as a subject-teacher under RUSA.

Future Plan of the Department

  1. Introduction of postgraduate degree course 
  2.  Publish the departmental journal and include it in the UGC-CARE list. 
  3. To organize the National Youth Conference.
  4. Increase the number of MoUs with other educational institutions and agencies. 
  5. To enroll more in community-related activities. 
  6. Graduate more academically prepared students. 
  7. Prepare students for competitive exams by organising workshops and lecture programmes.
